ABSTRACT

Nurses want to practice nursing!  Employment in most healthcare locations does not allow nurses to work to the full extent of their license. Nurses often state that they are burned out and want to leave the profession after 2-4 years of work.  This study, funded through the American Nurse Foundation Identifies the relationship between nurses working in a gig economy and the incidence of burnout as well as joy and meaning. It is hypothesized that nurses working in the gig economy will experience more joy and meaning in their work, and will demonstrate less burnout than those who are not working in this capacity.

The purpose of this study is to test an innovative transitional care model (Navi Nurse model) at the time of hospital discharge by leveraging a nursing gig workforce. There are two aims to the study: Aim 1 is to capture the patient experience for patients transitioning from hospital to home and Aim 2 is to capture the nurse experience of burnout, joy and meaning in their work.  This abstract will focus on Aim 2 and share data captured from two groups of nurses; Group 1 are nurses working in an acute care hospital and group 2 are nurses who are working with Navi Nurses as gig workers.  Both quantitative and qualitative data will be presented.

The three year funded study is just entering year 2 and is expected to be completed by June 2025.
