ABSTRACT

Overall objective: Create fun for CPR awareness.

A hospital, a mystery, and a game of elimination. The purpose of developing this was to support facility-wide implementation of the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) which supports mastery of skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills and coincide with the American Heart Association (AHA) National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) week was serendipitous. The team of Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practitioners set out to a heart healthy immersive game. The NPDs geared gameplay to include both clinical and non-clinical facility staff. The need to engage staff was uniquely addressed through innovation and gamification known as “Code Blue Clue: An Elimination Game”.

Game design: Teams complete daily activities, submit their completions, and collect an elimination deck card (EDC). The EDC provided them a clue towards completing the game by simply crossing of victim, a location, and a cause. Victims were staff members, locations were photos of various areas on the facility grounds, and the causes were the H’s and T’s known as the reversible causes of cardiac arrest.

Game outcomes included 11 teams, 40 participants with 100% positive feedback about learning heart health, and CPR (RQI). This event had two keynote speakers who talked about their experience after a cardiac event. Also played nationally as a 3-day gamification event which celebrated successful outcomes such as 823 unique submissions, 163 (75% inquires) for more information, 23 teams played, and 71 participants agreed this was a successful way to introduce CPR/AED/RQI and creates entices for staff to play into engagement.
