ABSTRACT

This poster describes the American Academy of Nursing’s “Have you Ever Served” campaign, which was developed to educate health care providers and military veterans about the types of screening questions that should be asked of every patient who served in the military, or whose family member(s) served. It also shares a list of all the diseases related to possible exposure, such as Agent Orange in Korea and Vietnam and Burn Pits in the Middle East. The PACT Act passed by the U.S. Congress has provided additional coverage for these problems, even if the patient is not seeking care in a Veterans Administration health care facility. Diseases similar to those caused by Burn Pits have also appeared in firefighters and other first responders, increasing the importance of educating all health care providers. A pocket card listing the screening questions and health care conditions will be distributed as part of the poster display.
