ABSTRACT
Abstract: “An Interprofessional Approach to Mitigate Workplace Violence” initiative was designed to reduce injury rates among nurses and staff due to workplace violence through a comprehensive, evidence-based approach.
The project included several key components: comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities, evidence-based training programs to equip nurses and staff with the necessary tools and skills to de-escalate potentially violent situations, and enhanced security measures and protocols to ensure a proactive approach to incidents. Additionally, the initiative fostered a culture of reporting and support, encouraging staff to share concerns, and established a dedicated recovery team to provide immediate and ongoing support for staff members impacted by threats or acts of violence.
The implementation of this workplace safety initiative led to measurable and impactful outcomes. Notably, there was a significant reduction in nurse injury rates: prior to the program, the organizational nurse injury rate due to workplace violence was 0.22 injuries per patient day and clinic visits. Following the program’s implementation, monthly nurse injury rates decreased to 0.14, 0.10, and 0.06, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness. Additionally, staff confidence in managing and reducing active workplace violence improved significantly, reflecting the success of the training and support structures. These results highlight the critical role of leadership, training, and structured support systems in creating a safer workplace for all team members, setting a benchmark for excellence in workplace safety.
