ABSTRACT

The objective of this presentation is to highlight the vital role that a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepares nurses in shaping and enhancing the future of healthcare by improving the quality of patient care, particularly in Arizona. In general, the United States is experiencing a significant nursing shortage. Arizona is projected to face a substantial nursing shortage by 2030. Arizona is expected to have a shortage of registered nurses (RNs). This estimated shortage puts Arizona among the top states to experience the most severe nursing deficits. This shortage impacts patient care outcomes such as increased wait times, nurse burnout, and decreased quality of care. Studies show that BSN-prepared nurses can positively impact patient care and outcomes.
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) identifies that education significantly impacts the nurse clinician’s knowledge and competencies. According to the AACN, BSN-prepared nurses are equipped with various skills such as critical thinking, leadership, case management, and health promotion.
Furthermore, the BSN serves as a milestone for further education, such as advanced education, preparing graduates for roles in management, education, and specialized practice through pathways such as BSN-to-MSN, BSN-to-DNP, and BSN-to-PhD programs. Increasing the number of BSN-prepared nurses is not only a solution to the current shortage but also a strategic investment in the future of healthcare quality and innovation.
